What ID Is Required for a Criminal Record Check?

To complete your Canadian Criminal Record Check, you’ll need to upload a valid piece of government-issued photo ID. This is a mandatory step required by the RCMP before your check can be processed.

What Makes an ID Acceptable?

Your ID must:
  • Be issued by a federal, provincial, territorial, or state government
  • Not be expired
  • Clearly show the following details:
    • Your full name
    • Date of birth
    • A clear photo
    • Your signature
    • Expiry date
    • An ID number

Examples of Acceptable ID

  • Passport
  • Driver’s licence
  • Provincial/state ID card
  • Ontario Photo Card (pink)
  • Canadian military ID
  • Canadian Permanent Resident Card
  • Certificate of Indian Status (back side required)
  • U.S. Green Card
  • Canadian Refugee/Immigration papers
  • India Aadhaar Card (UIDAI)
  • Canadian citizenship card (photo must be under 10 years old)
  • Canadian Firearms License
  • CNIB ID Card
  • Government-issued BYID card (e.g. LCBO)
  • NEXUS or FAST cards
  • Security licence showing date of birth
  • US Tribal Identification Card

Examples of Unacceptable ID

  • Student ID cards
  • Canadian SIN papers
  • Work or study permits
  • Canadian health cards (except Quebec)
  • IDs without a photo
  • Expired IDs
  • Membership or work badges
  • Old Canadian citizenship cards (if the photo is 10+ years old)
  • Company-issued security passes
